Spruce Grove is the fastest-growing community in the Edmonton region. With the opening of two new, private industrial parks, the City retained Place Dynamics to identify the industries on which it should focus, and to develop a marketing strategy to reach prospects.

Spruce Grove is coming late to the industrial development landscape. Although it had existing industrial parks, these were largely filled during the period of rapid growth in the early 2000’s. Still, the community does have an impressive base from which to work. Considered along with the nearby, 10,000-acre Acheson Industrial Area, the City has existing clusters in heavy trucking services, prefabricated wood and steel structures, and oil field services.

With educated workers attracted by the community’s quality of life, it can position itself to build on a growing base of knowledge-based services, especially in environmental engineering and remediation,  human resources management, worker training, safety management, and custom software development.

Wholesale trade is a final target, oriented to small establishments providing parts and equipment to the oil, construction, and transportation industries.

The marketing plan was prepared to work within current staffing and budget levels. It includes a combination of business visitation to keep abreast of the high level of expansion activity among area businesses, call trips to specific industries within metropolitan areas from which investment is already being attracted, trade show attendance, and direct outreach to a provided list of prospects.

Following this project, Place Dynamics was retained to prepare an assessment and recommendations concerning taxes and incentives for business development.
